Potton Remembers - 14th November 2021

Last Sunday saw our morning service joining with other churches and members of the public, in the Town Centre, to take part in Potton’s Annual Remembrance Day Service and Parade. The service was ably led by two newcomers to Potton, Major Christine McCutcheon of the Salvation Army and our new Rector, the Rev Alex Wheatley. As usual, the service started on the Market Square with readings and meaningful words from both service leaders, of Remembrance and the loss of young members of our community who gave their lives in War, and with prayers and hymns. The gathering on the Square by Pottonians was once more impressive, with people who had always lived here and had probably lost family members in Wars, but also newcomers to the town who came to remember and support their new community. After the final Hymn had been sung, the crowd were formed up into a parade by Sgt Mason from the Army, assisted by a young member of the Scouts, to march, well maybe just walk, to the War Memorial at the Cemetery in Sandy Road. Here, the second part of the service was presented by the Rev Alex and Major Christine, with names of Potton’s Fallen Sons read out by Mr Alan Leggatt and as each name was called out, young children, members of local youth organisations, brought a small Poppy Remembrance Cross to be planted in a grass patch next to the Memorial. Finally, Wreaths were laid on the Memorial led by the County Deputy Lord Lieutenant, followed by Wreaths from all local organisations and churches. The last post was played by the Salvation Army Trumpeter at 11 O’clock, followed by the two minutes silence, broken only by the trumpeter playing Reveille. After the National Anthem had been sung, those attending were then invited to return to the Square and the nearby community centre for hot drinks and to be able to watch the event at the Cenotaph in London. Thanks go to all the organisers, mainly the Town Council, and to everyone who came to pay their respects.

Murder Mystery Evening with Potton Playhouse

Potton Playhouse are kindly putting on two productions of their murder mystery, "The Great British Bump Off" on the nights of 19 and 20 November in the St Mary's Hall.  Takings will be shared equally between the Hall and Potton Hall for All.  Please support this event through buying a ticket at either Camerons or Tysoes.  Maximum attendance of 55 each evening.  If you are unable to attend would you kindly consider donating a baking related item to the raffles and let David Tall know, 261713, and he will arrange collection.  Many thanks"
