A Busy Weekend at St Mary's! Part 1

The weekend got off to a really busy start on Saturday with our annual Fireworks and Bonfire evening, on the Church Field. We were lucky it happened at all as the weather had not behaved all day but the Firework Crew, two competent young ladies this year, did the tests they need to do checking wind direction and gusting but declared all was within the required limits so apart from some light rain, the evening could go ahead . Meanwhile a keen crowd were turning up for the event and tucked into the prepared food mountain of hot and cold snacks, soup and drinks or a delicious Burger or Hot Dog from the BBQ whilst awaiting the start of the display. Many took advantage of the hall to wait in, avoiding getting too wet. The bonfire was duly lit by Stephen and his crew at 6.30 pm prompt and that soon built to a huge blaze perhaps helping to warm the area up and tempting those hiding in the hall to come out! The bonfire was well underway by the time came round to 7.15pm when the fireworks started and what a great display that was, really impressive and a good 15 minute show with people forgetting absolutely that it was still raining a little. It was really entertaining with plenty of novel displays. At the end the crowd applauded the two Fireworks Crew ladies for a brilliant display. The bonfire burned on but most visitors had left the site by about 8pm, going home to get warm and dry no doubt. However, a few stayed a bit longer helping to consume the final few burgers and hotdogs that remained. A big thank you to the BBQ Chefs, the inside caterers with their delicious range of home made soups and cakes, snacks and drinks. They were busy all evening as was a new stall this year run by Paul, a mulled wine bar, popular all evening! Well done to all the helpers for putting on such a splendid, well organised evening, many thanks from us all.
